On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay become the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, on Tenzing Norgay’s (adopted) 39th birthday. Since their success thousands have successfully reached the summit. However, death is still common. Hundreds have died on the mountain and many bodies are still there. Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer is Krakauer’s experience at the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Eight climbers were killed and several others were stranded during one rogue storm while climbing Everest.
