On May 17, 1983, the U.S. Department of Energy declassifies documents showing world’s largest mercury pollution event in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. 4.2 millions pounds of mercury are found to have been released into the public environment. The release of this information was in response to the Appalachian Observer’s Freedom of Information Act request. Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret Danger of Everyday Things by Rick Smith demonstrates how, despite catastrophic events like these, we are still exposed to large amounts of pollution in our daily lives.
