Historically, it commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. Cinco de Mayo celebrations are part of the long and intertwined histories of Mexico and the United States. Zorro acts as an embodiment of this history as a fictional character created in 1919 by American pulp writer Johnston McCulley. His adventures are set in the Pueblo of Los Angeles during the era of Spanish California Zorro by Isabel Allende is one of the most recent literary reincarnations of the classic character.
