March 21 marks World Poetry Day. It was established by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999 with the hopes to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world. With all of its assumed beauty and art, poetry is not one of the most popular. So when novel approaches to poetry manifest, it opens up consideration why poetry has endured over millennia. Toby Barlow taps into one of the oldest forms of storytelling, the epic, to tell the story of an ancient race of lycanthropes and a dogcatcher named Anthony caught in the middle of a battle between rival factions. It is a story of romance and bloodshed. It is perfect epic poetry fodder.
