On February 25,1964, the North Korean Prime Minister Kim Il-sung calls for the removal of land ownership to turn their assets to state control. This begins a chapter of extreme isolation and dictatorial leadership that continues in that part of the world. Entrance into North Korea is controversial and rare. Outsiders and constantly surveilled and guarded. Sometimes they are even arrested, their whereabouts and wellbeing become at the mercy of North Korea’s brutal workcamps. Guy Delisle had once the rare opportunity as a Westerner to visit North Korea for work. While photos were and are still always a danger, Delisle is a cartoonist and uses his artistic sense of observation to simply and frankly tell of his time in the walls of this often mysterious world.
