February 13 marks Galentine’s Day in American culture. It is a day women are able to celebrate themselves and their relationships with other women. February 13 also sometimes marks Mardi Gras being in the season when Lent may start. In the United States, Mardi Gras and New Orleans are often considered in the same thought. Bringing these otherwise, separate themes together, A Kind of Freedom takes inspiration from the very human life of women and their family in New Orleans over the decades. Mothers and their daughters must survive through racial disparity in the South and its relentless reverberations down the decades.
