On February 5, 1885, King Leopold II of Belgium establishes the Congo as a personal possession. His rule would prove to be one of the most horrific chapters in global colonialism, the effects of which the world is still recovering. Parts of this recovery are made painful and acute in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible. A missionary family’s worldview, possessions, and even faith are thrown into disarray and reconstruction over three decades in postcolonial Africa.
