On January 12, 1628 Charles Perrault is born in Paris, France. Like the Grimm Brothers, he leaves his mark in the collections of folk tales he left behind. His stories, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, and others are essential parts of Western culture and identity. They are so essential, their retellings are also cherished. Gail Carson Levine’s Ella Enchanted is a Newberry Award Winner and has been remade into a movie. As retellings like this continue to capture imaginations so successfully, the legacy of Perrault is certain to continue.
