On January 10, 1920, the Treaty of Versailles takes effect. This officially ends World War I. What started this war was not one but a series of things and countless historians and journalists have made it their mission to dissect the events that lead this global event which would set the tone for the rest of the century. The continued popularity of Barbara W. Tuchman’s Pulitzer winning book, The Guns of August, suggests it is still a goof bet for starting your own search finding out. Tuchman walks the reader though the European diplomatic stage just before World War I. In this setting she points out with clear narrative and precision the letters, the tones, the motivations that triggered the war that was to end all wars. Most importantly and hauntingly, she pinpoints just where we may have been able to avoid it all as well.
