On December 9, 1979 the smallpox virus is eradicated, becoming the first of only two diseases that have been driven to extinction in known human history. Rinderpest in 2011 is the other. Before this victory, smallpox caused destruction and terror for most of human existence. Jennifer Lee Carrell’s The Speckled Monster: A Historical Tale of Battling Smallpox attempts to help her readers connect with that struggle through the personal and dramatic stories of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Dr. Zabdiel Boylston who championed smallpox vaccination in its early days in western medicine.
