On November 28, 1925, The Grand Ole Opry begins broadcasting in Nashville, Tennessee, as the WSM Barn Dance. The show has had more stars through the decades than a list of highlights can exhaust. To venture an attempt to capture the essence of one such start is Greg Neri’s Hello, I’m Johnny Cash. While still a children’s book, Neri fills is work full of poetry so the reader can begin to grasp at the range of emotions that filled Cash’s life, which a more traditional narrative of prose might not be able to convey. That being said, it is a heavy read for a picture book. Creative oral interpretation though makes the pages spring to more life.
