On November 11, 1926 the United States Numbered Highway System is established. Car culture is essential to understanding American culture. It is not surprising then that when contemporary literature wants to introduce the concept of a very “American” journey, it turns to the experience of a road trip. A fantastical and fun such road trip journey is lead by Neil Gaiman through his book, American Gods. As Gaiman’s character, Shadow meets and fights mythological characters and gods, he goes across the country often with a car. It takes him into the nooks and alleys of America life, which makes the reader see just what makes its people what they are.
