On October 29, 1787 Don Giovanni premieres for the first time. It has since remained firmly in the opera world as a staple work. The opera was based on the older and iconic idea of the Don Juan character, which originated in 17th century Spanish literature. Up to the modern day, “Don Juan” is a common metaphor to describe some who is a womanizer.
The concept of the character continues to live on in modern literary expressions including young adult fiction like The Wager by Donna Jo Napoli.
