On October 15, 1956, the First FORTRAN Reference Manual is Released. Its use and standardization becomes widely in use partly in thanks to the work of the United State Navy’s Admiral Grace Hopper. That work developed the giant shoulders much of today’s technology still stands on.
FORTRAN remains an indispensable legacy computer language. Some legacy computer processes still owe their continued existence and efficiency to FORTRAN. However, it has been replaced over the decades by powerful and object-oriented languages that allow machines to do more than ever.
