October 8 occasionally falls on the second Monday of October, the traditional designated day honoring Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the European’s New World. The chain reaction of events following this event would terminate the lives and cultures of millions of people already established on the islands Columbus explored the greater continent nearby. Thomas King’s children’s book revisits the traditionally European narrative and reintroduces the story in the tradition of coyote legends.

King is an American-Canadian writer who has many works representing the perspective of the First Nations. A Coyote Columbus Story is a classic representation of his technique for combining Western narratives with First Nation oral storytelling devices.
