On April 6, 1947, the first Tony Awards are presented for theatrical achievement. Some of best musical performances have looked to literature for their inspiration. Les Miserables is a notable example. A more contemporary example is Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel. Originally released as a graphic memoir in 2006, the adapted musical was nominated for twelve Tony Awards, winning five, including Best Musical. The narrative is non-linear. Even Bechdel describes it as “going over the same material, but starting from the outside and spiraling into the center of the story.” (https://web.archive.org/web/20080411200603/http://wh.rutgers.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=140%3Aalison-bechdels-graphic-narrative&catid=52%3AwarVideos&Itemid=91) The overall story makes anyone who has had a family and who has had to grow up learning secrets and learning about themselves at the same time will see parts of their own lives in Bechdel’s.
