On March 3, 1938, oil is discovered in Saudi Arabia. It becomes one of the key moments in the country’s history. Abdulaziz ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Faisal ibn Turki ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al Saud (Abdulaziz of the House of Saud) had taken control of Riyadh in 1902, his family’s ancestral home city. It was the start of many other victories, which would make the House of Saud the ruling family over almost every part of central Arabia. The country’s discovery of oil put Abdulaziz in a position to provide large-scale oil production as the rest of the world recovered from World War II.
Saudi Arabia’s power has made it a focal point of Arabian cultural criticism in 2007 Rajaa Alsanea used her knowledge and wisdom as a Saudi woman to open up the extremely private and controlled world of women in Riyadh. Alsanea’s work was met with the force of the cultural restriction she critique with an initial ban on her book in Saudi Arabia. That ban has since been lifted.
