On February 20, 2005 Hunter S Thompson passes away in Woody Creek, Colorado. He has been attributed often as the founding father of gonzo journalism, a style that rids itself of prententions against objectivity and celebrates the personal account of the present witness, who is also the writer. Thompson’s article “The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved,” written for the June 1970 edition of Scanlan’s Monthly, is often cited as a perfect example. His novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, was his opportunity to bring the reader into the mindset of the gonzo journalist. “But what was the story? Nobody had bothered to say. So we would have to drum it up on our own. Free Enterprise. The American Dream. Horatio Alger gone mad on drugs in Las Vegas. Do it now: pure Gonzo journalism.”
