On February 11, 1979, the Iranian Revolution establishes an Islamic theocracy under the leadership of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Nobel prize winner and human rights lawyer, Shirin Ebadi, is a voice that has had to defy Iran in her quest to advocate for it. Iran Awakening is Ebadi’s outline of her views on Islam, democracy, and gender equality. Though she has passionately opposed her government, she sees Iran’s problems as something only the Iranian people can truely and sustainably fix. This book also found difficulty being published in the United States. Because of Iran’s political relationship with the US, the government attempted to ban the book on grounds all Iranian writers should be banned because of American relations with Iran. Ebadi’s American publisher prevailed on the grounds of the First Amendment.
