On February 1, 1709, Alexander Selkirk is rescued after being shipwrecked on a desert island. His story inspired Daniel Defoe in writing Robinson Crusoe. Defoe uses the story to explore the nature of God and fate. His main character has been described as an everyman and even a representation of British colonization.
