On January 31, 1919, Jackie Robinson is born in Cairo, Georgia. Robinson was a pioneer of his culture and race in addition to being an exceptional athlete, which makes him a particularly interesting motif in Bette Bao Lord’s children’s book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. The story follows an American pioneer of another kind at the time, a little girl named Shirley Temple Wong. She leaves with her family their secure life within China following World War II for a new life of opportunity in America. Shirley has to explore and struggle for what it means to be an American for herself at the same time as Robinson fights his own battles.
