On January 23, 1997, Madeleine Albright becomes the first woman to serve as United States Secretary of State. Albright’s life makes her uniquely positioned as the author of Fascism: A Warning. She became the first female United States Secretary of State in U.S. history, servingfrom 1997 to 2001 under the Clinton administration. However she started life in Czechoslovakia where she and her family immigrated from in 1948, escaping a damaged post-World War II Europe. She became a U.S. citizen in 1957.
