On January 7, 1891, Zora Neale Hurston is born in Notasulga, Alabama. She came to be well-regarded during the Harlem Rennisance but would proove to be a literary genius with growing popularity in the years beyond her death. Her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God is a common part of American high school curriculumn and was one her better known works. Its popularity though has been challeneged with Hurston’s insightful book Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo,” which wasn’t published until 2018 due to controversies surrounding the book at the time.
