On January 6, 1878, Carl Sandburg is born in Galesburg, Illinois. Over his life he won three Pulitzer Prizes: two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. Sandburg’s work found widespread contempoary appeal. His subjects leaned on capturing daily life. President Lyndon B. Johnson observed when the poet died that “Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America.”
