On November 29, 1972, Atari releases Pong. It becomes the first commercially successful video game. Video games and their role in our lives have dramatically changed since that time. Ernest Cline manages to tap into contemporary culture’s mindset somewhat with Ready Player One. Though it may be known first for its movie adaptation for some years, the novel has had a solid fan base regardless. Cline takes the current purpose of some video games as an escape from reality and amplifies it in a world of vast poverty that people seek to escape from in the OASIS. The plot and driving force is that escape. While the story progresses, Cline plays with and teases out humanities’ nature when it is truly desperate.
