On October 16 Mr George Lusk of the London police receives a letter that is addressed “FROM HELL.” It contains half a kidney. There is press speculation that it belonged to Catherine Eddowes, one of the victims of Jack the Ripper. The murders attributed to this infamous serial killer continue to live on in popular culture including the Alan Moore classic graphic novel, From Hell.
The graphic novel uses and modifies one Jack the Ripper theory that the murders where part of a conspiracy to conceal the birth Prince Albert Victor’s illegitimate child.
From Hell was first published as a comic series from 1989 to 1998. It was complied and sold as a complete set beginning in 1999. It was adapted into a film under the same title in 2001.
