On October 9, 1986 Phantom of the Opera opens on Broadway. The musical is based on the early 20th century novel by Gaston Leroux. It is relatively short at only about 190 pages, depending on the printing. Before even that, Leroux had published the story as a serialization in Le Gaulois, a daily French newspaper, from September 1909, to January 1910. Leroux had been inspired by the Palais Garnier in Paris. The story maintained its allure over a century up to the 1980s when it became the musical classic it is often known as today.

  1. Great read! (and NOT the same as the musical!) Although there are different stories from Susan Kay from a different perspective and outcome, the original is still tragically beautiful!
